Morzine, a mountain biker’s paradise.

Here’s the lowdown on Europe’s number 1 destination for mountain biking, and why you shouldn’t miss out.

When you arrive in Morzine you’ll be meet by the Club Giraffe staff who will divide guests into two different levels of rider and lead you on an introductory ride. This is essential to get the lay of the land and their input into the best trails for you to try during the week. They’ll point out important places, important junctions and the lifts leading to different parts of the Portes du Soleil. They are not cycling instructors, but will take you out for three hours to make sure you get the most out of your trip.

Morzine may have the reputation as a place that only downhillers should visit, but that’s no longer true! There are trails for every level of rider, and every style of rider. Whether easy trails and views are your thing, or techy singletrack, or challenging climbs, or steep forest DHs…. you’ll find it all in Morzine.

So where is Morzine?

Morzine is a French Alpine village at 1000 metres of altitude. It’s just an hour and 15 minutes away from Geneva and centrally located in the huge Portes du Soleil linked bike (and ski!) area. If your french is s little rusty… Portes du Soleil means Gateway to the Sun.

Why pick Morzine as a riding destination?

The only difficulty with this question is where to start….

Firstly, the lifts! Going away on a riding holiday you’re looking for something more than you have back home, and a different experience. There’s not just one lift accessing one Bike Park, but 19 lifts across 12 resorts, and 4 internationally renowned Bike Parks. Add to this numerous graded trails, stunning Alpine views and pretty little villages to stop in, it’s a riding experience without comparison anywhere in the world.

Secondly, over 650 kilometres of trails await you. All skill levels are catered for from beginner to expert, and all riding styles from family to XC, to Enduro, to DH.

Thirdly, Independence! The trails are all well signposted and the Portes du Soleil print a free trail map, so you can find your way about easily. It’s the ease and convenience of skiing in a major resort transferred to mountain biking.

And not forgetting….Ease! Morzine is just an hour and 15 minutes from Geneva. Shuttles carry you and your bike to resort so getting there is really quick & easy. There is an enormous supply of bike friendly accommodation, and all the services you need in town.

When is a good time to go to Morzine?

Anytime the lifts are open - from the last week in June through to the beginning of September.

What about rain?

Just like the rest of Europe, there is rain and no way to guarantee a rain free trip. There are no statistics to back up one month being better than another. The best way is to come prepared to ride in the rain, but keep your fingers crossed for a rain free week!

Who is a Morzine MTB holiday for?

Anyone who loves riding bikes and who rides on a regular basis (once or twice a week) and has some experience of riding downhill, for example in one of the UK Bike Parks.

Beware of misconceptions! Morzine is not just for downhillers. It’s a paradise for all mountain bikers. Read about events like the Pass’Portes du Soleil, the reviews from previous guests, and judge for yourself.

Where will I ride?

In Morzine you won’t need a car. Our accommodation is all central and two cable cars leave from the village to connect you to all the riding.

The Pleney gondola gets you up the Pleney to ride on the trails there and head over to Les Gets. The other lift is called Super Morzine and both accesses the Bike Park on that same mountain and is the departure point for the rest of the Portes du Soleil: Avoriaz, Châtel, Champéry, Morgins….

Les Gets is about 5km west of Morzine and a couple of hundred metres higher. After riding over from Pleney you’ll come to the bottom of Chavannes chair lift, taking this accesses the Chavannes tracks, and you can head towards the Nauchets chair with numerous tracks under it. You can also use this lift to get back to Morzine, or you can roll back on the road. On the other side of the village is the Mont Chery cable car, with a few marked DHs and an XC loop off it.

On the other side of Morzine, the Super Morzine gondola and Zore chair are the starting point for a huge area of riding. You’ll likely pass through Avoriaz and Lindarets a number of times during your holiday. In Lindarets there are plenty of cafés for a lunch stop as well as a lift back up towards Avoriaz, and the Chaux Fleurie to take you to the top of the Châtel Bike Park. From Lindarets there’s also the option of riding down to Montriond lake.

But, that’s not all! There’s a further chair lift up Mossettes, the highest point in the area, and the French/Swiss border. This gives access to Les Crosets and Champéry and is also one of the routes to get to Morgins. Your other access for Morgins is from Châtel, crossing through from the Bike Park to the village, and up the Super Châtel lift.

There’s a huge area to explore and our reps have a meeting place every evening where they will be happy to sit down and go through route ideas with you.

So, how do I get there?

The quickest is to fly to Geneva, which has numerous flights from UK airports. We can then organise your shuttle (for you and your bike) to Morzine.

Alternatively, driving takes around 8 hours from Calais.

Where should I stay?

The most popular Morzine accommodation are fully equipped self-catered apartments. We have various sizes, depending on the size of group.

We also have a great selection of hotels if you prefer staying in a hotel.

Should I bring my own bike or rent?

Despite the initial cost seeming high, renting a bike is often the best option. It saves you the cost and hassle of flying your own bike out and you are likely to get a more suitable bike for riding in Morzine. The mountains are also tough on your bike so you save a lot of wear and tear on your own bike.

We are able to get a 5% discount with many of the local bike shops, and recommend booking in advance.

Where should I eat?

There is a wide range of restaurants in Morzine, and you’ll find more details under “The Town” information.

The supermarkets are also well stocked and have reasonable prices.

What can I do in the evening?

There are plenty of bars for a post ride beer, or even carrying on into the night. Our reps are happy to advise on where to go.

What can I do on a day off the bike?

There’s a huge range of other activities: rafting, canyoning, a high rope park, zip wire, paragliding or a day out to Geneva or Annecy. Our reps can sit down with you to advise.

When should I come?

Most people come for a week between mid June and early September. Some accommodation has flexible booking dates.

Why should I book with you rather than direct to a hotel?

You pay the same, but get a lot more!

  1. Instead of having to sort out everything yourself, we’ll do it all for you. You also receive a 5% discount on your lift pass and bike rental.
  2. Club Giraffe have two representatives in Morzine to accompany you on a first ride and help advise you on further rides. This is invaluable for getting the most out of your holiday. It’s because of this that many of our guests come back to Morzine year after year, some have even been eight times!

If you want more information on the trails check out our DH, Enduro and XC pages. You can also call us to speak about it and make sure that Morzine is the place for you!
